The Black River FFA Chapter traveled with the Buckeye FFA Chapter on March 10, to participate in the Southeast Judging Invitational at the Muskingum County Livestock Auction House. Team members participated in the Horse Judging, General Livestock, and Nature Interpretation competitions.
The Nature Interpretation competition consists of a student’s capability to evaluate and/or determine techniques of leading nature and wildlife programs. Contestants will identify problem plant and animal species, including invasive and non-native species, and select those practices to best control the species based on the scenario provided. In addition, each student will complete a 50 question written exam. The team consisted of Collin Burnett and John Bricker. Collin placed 8th and John placed 16th out of a total of 38 individuals.
The Horse Judging competition consists of judging two halter classes, one performance, and a class of hay, identifying different types of tack and equipment, and taking a 50-question written test. Overall the horse team placed 4th out of 17 teams and 71 individuals. The team consisted of Madison Stuart (1st), Hannah Abfall (17th) and Brianna Englehart (32nd). In addition, one Black River FFA middle school student participated in the event: Kailee Baker who received 26th placed.
The General Livestock competition consists of members judging both breeding and market classes for sheep, goats, swine and beef cattle. Participants also answer conformation and production questions for each class in addition to completing a current market grid. The General Livestock team earned 28th out of 40 teams. The team consisted of members Anna Shearer (134th) and Taylor Hendershot (133rd). In addition, eight Black River FFA middle school students also participated in the event: Shacoy Steele (332th), Katlyn Kubitz (322nd), Kristen Lampshire (336th) Cassidy Mrakuzic (320th), Kaitlyn Long (254th), Joe Mennel (158th), Coleton Thompson (283rd) and Hope Diaz (113th).
In addition, the chapter finished up their spring invitational season on March 18, at the Ashland FFA Alumni Invitational. Team members participated in the Horse Judging and General Livestock competitions.
The Horse Judging team placed 1st out of 14 teams and 124 individuals. The team consisted of Madison Stuart (27th), Hannah McKenzie (8th), Kelly Wilson (44th), Sora Edwards (42nd), Brianna Englehart (77th), In addition, two Black River middle school students participated in the event: Kailee Baker (8th) and Chloee Howard (17th).
The General Livestock team consisted of members, Anna Shearer (57th), Brianna Clifford (66th), Callee Aviles (106th), Eric Cordonnier (56th), and Taylor Hendershot (258th). In addition, one Black River middle school student also participated in the event: Hope Diaz (155th). Congratulations to all team members!
